Yes, the best thing to do is a Valium (diazepam) taper. Librium (Chlordiazepoxide) is also used in this purpose but Valium is preferred by most. Ativan has s tiny half life but Valium lasts for 22-26hrs and up to 100hrs. And Valium has a significant amount of active metabolites that stay in the body helping the withdrawal. Ativan is occasionally used (often by IV) but usually only during the first day or two when people are at a high risk of seizure.
Also, long term use of high dose benzodiazepines has been associated with the development of agoraphobia. And you sound like you are having rebound anxiety and perhaps post acute withdrawal syndrome. Post acute withdrawal can last a long time after medical detox (1 month, even years) . In this time the brain is adjusting to the lack of drug. But if you have just stopped the Ativan you really do need to see your doctor to get detox drugs (valium). If you were taking a huge dose it might be useful to be hospitalized. If you are in hospital doctors can typically make you more comfortable and more quickly detox you. But this is typically reserved for people taking incredibly large doses or who are having serious problems. Ideally withdrawal should be done over 3-6 months or more. It is possible to do a rapid detox but this is not typically a good idea and people who do this often have a higher rate of using benzo's again.Stopped taking Ativan after 5 years, tips and advice please!!?
Talk to your doctor about using a Valium taper to withdraw from the medication. Ativan has too short a half life in the body to withdraw using it and a dose decrease. It takes about a month to six weeks to do properly, and is actually pretty painless for the overwhelming majority of people.
