Dog Tips and Advice Disparately Needed. Help?

So, me and my family have owned Hank (a chi wa wa / dachshund) since he was a pup. And ever since he was a pup, he's been scared to death of other dogs and reacts with violence, so we've never work on this with him. Well, we just bought another dog, a couple days ago. She is a German Shephard/Lab, and is as sweet as can be. She's 18 months old, and Hank is about 2-2.5 years old. All Honey (new dog) wants to do is play with Hank, and hank hates her. What I've done is sat hank in the middle of the lawn, and allowed Honey and Hank to sniff each other. Hank just freezes up, and won't move, and he'll just sit there and growl at her, or run and hid under a chair. Then bark at her. What can I do to get Hank to get over his fear of Honey. How can I make them friends?Dog Tips and Advice Disparately Needed. Help?
I do dachshund rescue and frequently bring new dogs in.

What I do is set up an x-pen (like a playpen with no floor), put the new dog in it and let the resident dogs sniff, growl, whatever, at the new dog.

Sometimes it takes just a short time, other times days, but eventually the new dog becomes familiar to the resident ones and they accept him.

Under no circumstances leave the 2 dogs together alone until they accept each other - be ready to come between (just use your legs and knees to position the dogs apart)

it it looks as if it will get serious, but some snarling and posturing is normal enough.

What you are doing is a good idea, but you need to put a barrier in between the dogs so that they are not afraid.

If you don't have an x-pen, put a baby gate between 2 rooms, that way they can sniff and growl at will, but not actually touch each other.

Good luck, have patience, try not to interfere too much, they should work it out themselves.

I have 5 dogs of my own and have fostered dozens of others, it always works out, just takes time.

The big problem with little dogs is the owners don't train them like big dogs.

Hank needs to be corrected for his impolite behavior, as soon as he gets into that freeze mode, snap him out!

Put him on the leash until the issue is resolved. The leash gives him security and you communication and control.

As soon as you see the tension, tap his rump, say ';uh-uh';, and or give the leash a quick jerk. Keep reminding him to leave that state of mind until he relaxes. This may take 30 minutes or 5, it depends on your state of mind and determination. Stay calm and relaxed, if you are the dogs can be too. Anyone who gets upset about this should leave the area they will mess up the process. It may help to do this out of Hank's territory. Honey must be polite too, ask her to lie down, it will make her less intimidating.
