Not so bad...I had 2 (both planned). They say that recovery is easier the second time around. (I found that to be true.) Watch out if they offer you epidural morphine. It works like a dream but can make you puke.
Take the pain meds exactly as prescribed. Don't try to be tough those first 2 days after. Holding a pillow to your belly is a must when you need to move around or cough.
It'll be okay. I had the epidural so that I could be awake for both my babies' deliveries....never regretted it!
Plus side: your baby's head will be nicely shaped...not a conehead like V-birth babies. :)C section? advice and tips ?
First try to calm down. It really isn't all that bad. I had to have two c-sections. My first was because after 2 hours of pushing my daughter would not come out and her vitals were dropping so I had to have a c-section. I was nervous but I knew everything was going to be fine. My second one was a scheduled c-section but he decided to come early. What they do is they will give you an IV of fluids and then get you all situated for your c-section. Then they will give you a Spinal Block which is just like an epidural but better so you don't feel anything other then pressure. then they will do the procedure and it doesn't take long before you hear your beautiful baby crying. It is the best sound ever. Closing you back up will take a little while especially if you ask for sutures instead of staples. I had staples the first time and Oozed a lot so the second time i asked for sutures. You probably wont see your baby until after they weigh them. They will let you see your baby for a couple of min before they take the baby to the nursery. The father will be able to go with the baby if you want him to or he will be able to stay with you. After closure they will clean the betadine off of you and then you will go to recovery for about an hour. Try to relax and sleep there if you can so you can be alert for your baby when you get to your room.
I forgot you will get a foley put in also while they are prepping you for surgery. You wont really feel anything with that. You will most likely keep that in for the whole day and come out at night or they may have you wait until the next morning to take it out.
having a c-section is a little nerve wracking but remember stay calm and it is all worth it in the end when you see your baby.
Make sure they get you up and walking that night. you want to get up and walk a very little bit that night so your muscles can streatch a little bit. They will have you hold a pillow there to help you.
Good Luck with everything and congratulations on your upcoming arrival!!!
I have had 2 c-sections. My first one was an emergency surgery and that was pretty hard. Because they were in a hurry to get my son out, the cut was really big. On top of that, I had been in labor for 18 hours on pitocin so I was really sore. However, my 2nd c-section was planned and was great. The cut was so tiny (and 5 months later you cannot hardly see the scar. My old c-section from 2 years ago is much darker). When you get to the hospital the morning of the c-section, they will put the IV in, draw blood if necessary, they will shave your private area and put a patch on your leg to ground you so that none of the tools will shock you. They will wheel you into the operating room and you will sit on the edge of the bed and numb you by a shot in your spine. It does hurt a little, but it is fast. You will then lay down and they will have you get situated in the position that they want. The had me lay on a wedge so that I was turned slightly to the side. By time you are situated, you will have lost feeling from right above the stomach down. They will have your arms out and they will hook you to a blood pressure machine. The surgery goes pretty quick. You will feel pressure, but no pain. My 1st took 25 minutes and my 2nd took 40. My advice to you is to get lots of sleep at the hospital. Most places will take the baby to the nursery at night so you can get some sleep. It will hurt for a few days to walk and stand, make some meals right now and freeze them so that you do not have to stand if you are hurting. Plus, move around a lot. Walking really does help you heal faster. Oh, one other thing that I did not know about beforehand. They use staples in the incision and they will pull them within a few days. Ask them when they are planning to do this so that you can take pain medicine before. It is not horrible pain, but it will be a lot easier if you take something beforehand. Don't worry about the surgery. It is not as bad as it may seem. Good luck.
here's my story:
i went into the hospital on a tuesday night to be induced.. but the doctor came in and told me that i was too small to pass my baby. and plus he could be up to ten pounds and she didnt want to risk anything. so she told me that i had to have a c section. which i didnt want at all. i started crying and everything bc i was so scared about it.. well the following morning it was time for my surgery and they wheeled me into the OR and it all happened so fast. they gave me the epidural which took like a minute it seemed to kick in.. and they straped me to the table, told my husband to come in and with in a matter of minutes my baby boy was born. i was really nausous though. i threw up i think twice before they wheeled me into the OR and i threw up once while the surgery was going on. i didnt feel a thing. and its so weird bc you cant move your legs no matter how hard you try. so after i was stitched up and everything they put me back on my bed and put some heated blankets on me bc the epidural can make you very cold. i dont really remember much about the rest of the day bc of the pain medicine they have you on. but it really didnt hurt as bad as i could ever imagine it. it isnt bad at all. just try not to be nervous bc you might get sick. good luck with everything!
I just posted a question about having a c-section. I had mine 6 weeks ago and I am still in pain. Im a first time mom so I didnt think my water would break on its own...it did, at 130 in the morning. I was progressing really fast but got stuck at 8 centimeters for over 8 hours. Jaiden wasnt liking the contractions to much after 18 hours of labor and her heart rate kept dropping...after wheeling me in to the er, they lost her heartbeat completely. I didnt think my husband was going to make it into the er on time...everything happened so fast. My doctor beat me up pretty badly trying to get her out. Dont let my story worry you. You having a scheduled c-section the docs will take their time. You will be sore afterwords and it will hurt like hell to laugh and cough and pray you dont sneeze. Hold a pillow to your stomach as tight as you can when you do any of those things. It really hurts to walk too but that is the best thing you can do. Just dont over do it and no vacuuming. I didnt have staples so I can help you there. Just know that regardless of the pain it is so worth it. Good luck hun! Congrats too.
ok heres my story...
I was induced on a thursday because of my blood pressure. I got there at 5am and they started the poticin (sp?) 8am they broke my water and then i got the epidural around 10-11 well i was planning on having a vaginal birth but after 12 hours i was only 4 cm dilated so we decided to have a c-section. Well I wasn't really nervous until i got into the OR and I was by myself for that little bit while they were getting ready and my boyfriend was outside waiting so i was crying lol. my doctor was great and told me everything she was doing. But it was weird cause i remember shaking REALLY BAD, probably just from nerves though. and after my daughter was out i felt this awful pressure (honestly i think its because i was so nervous from her actually being out cause im 19 and a young mom so all the things were running through my head too).
they actually put me to sleep soon after the shaking and i didnt wake up for a long time. i really hope yours goes a lot smoother and since you already know your gonna have a c-section you will be calmer.
The next day though, my nurses were on to me about walking...i was so drugged up i didn't want to walk at all. but i finally did cause they wouldnt get me ice unless i got it lol. but in all honesty it helped so much. its painful but it helps so much so even though i called the nurses bad names they were great and treated me great. i wish you the best of luck and congrats!!!!
with me... i was 2 weeks over, induced, labor all day, never got over a 4, so we decided to do one last minute. turns out she was too big, and i would've probably had to have one anyways. but it didn't bother me as much because i'm very modest, and pushing and everything scared me.
you are awake the whole time, but you can't feel the pain, just tugging and moving around. there is a sheet between your head and your shoulders so you can't see a thing. it's painful the first day, moving around, taking a shower, laughing... i didn't even try to breast feed because i was in a lot of pain. my husband stayed home for 2 weeks to help me, you definately need someone to help... but i don't regret it one bit. about after 2-3 weeks you start feeling better, although it takes awhile for the nerves to find each other, so it's numb for awhile.
we are planning to have another one anytime... and i plan to have another c-section. so obviously not that bad.
i would ask for stitches and not staples, heard bad things about the staples... stitches are great they dissolve, very easy!!
good luck and congrats!!
I had my dad with me in the room because i was scared to death to be by my self, you dont feel a thing, finding out you are going to get cut it will scare the hell outta anyone. the reason my dad was with me is because my husband fainted before they took me in to get my c-section.
I wasnt given my pain killers more then once and that was right after my surgery. Even when i asked for them i wasnt given them.
Stay ahead of your morphine drip and move around a lot in bed so when you get up you won;t be as sore. I've had two sections, going on three. Don't be nervous or you'll be very cold in the OR. I was so scared with my first that my anesthesiologist had to wrap my head in a towel because my teeth were chattering so hard he thought they'd chip. The second C-section I was fine and relaxed.
The strangest thing is to feel all the tugging and pushing but no pain.
High 5... mine just got scheduled for the 9th.
Ok, not JUST - it was friday. But in that time, lemme tell ya! There are a LOT of websites out there (babycenter.com ; storknet.com ; babynet.com ) that have numerous articles about step by step through a standard c-section. Not to mention questions to ask, variables, and what nots.
I'm having the procedure because the baby is breech and low on fluid. I'm scared out of my mind... not so much of the procedure, but of the fact that i have a definate date of when my life is gonna change forever!
Well, good luck to ya! Hope all is well... just remember to relax and, when in doubt, research!
Try to walk around the most you could while you're in the hospital. this will help in the healing process. I healed pretty quickly but i'm 21 and energetic. They prescribed me perkisets and motrin 800, i took them for a week after i got home. And trust me it HELPS a lottttt. My c-section was great, it was planned and i would do it again anytime!
Always remember, after the c section, if you feel like you are going to laugh, cough, or sneeze, hold a pillow on your belly real tight.
I was so relieved to get a csection after going through many long hours of painful contractions. It will be over in no time ... just make sure to relax!!
GO AHEAD
BREATH A SIGH OF RELIEF!
